Where to stay in Uluwatu, depending what you are here for.
The question is not which hotel, it is <b>which neighbourhood</b>. In Uluwatu there are twenty-five minutes of driving between one area and another, and choosing wrong changes the whole trip. This is written by the team that lives here and runs villas in all four.

Bingin
The surf heart of the Bukit and the liveliest area. You walk down to the beach on a long staircase, which is part of the charm and part of the problem: with luggage or small children it gets old. In exchange you have the best wave in Uluwatu below the house, the warungs hanging off the cliff and the place everyone ends up having dinner.
Melasti
The postcard beach: white sand, turquoise water and, unlike most of the Bukit, water you can genuinely swim in. You get there by car down the cliff road. It is the big beach club area, so on certain days there is noise and traffic. Quieter than Bingin to sleep in.
Balangan
Long sand beach, friendlier wave and considerably fewer people. It is the best of the four with children or if you genuinely want to switch off. The trade-off is fewer places to eat and infrastructure that lags a little.
Ungasan
The most central for getting around and the best if you are renting a scooter and covering ground. It is not beachfront, so if your plan is waking up facing the wave this is not your spot. In exchange it has the cliffs and the cleanest sunsets, and it usually comes out cheaper.
Getting around
There is no useful public transport. A scooter if you can ride, or Grab and Gojek, which work across the whole Bukit. Distances are deceptive: Bingin to Melasti is 25 minutes, not five. From the airport, between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the time.

Which is the best area of Uluwatu to stay in?
It depends what you are here for. Bingin if you surf and want atmosphere, Melasti if you want to swim, Balangan if you want quiet or are travelling with kids, Ungasan if you will be moving around a lot.
Uluwatu or Canggu?
They are different trips. Uluwatu is cliffs, reef surf and more calm. Canggu is more urban, with more cafes, more people and more nightlife. If you are here to surf and switch off, the Bukit.
How long is it from the airport to Uluwatu?
Between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the time of day. Traffic at certain hours is real.
Do I need to rent a scooter?
It helps a lot, but Grab and Gojek work across the whole Bukit. If you have never ridden a scooter, Bali is not the place to learn.
When is the best time to come?
April to October is the dry season and the best surf. November to March is wetter, quieter and cheaper. Christmas and New Year are the exception.
