At the southwest tip of Bali, the Bukit is a limestone plateau dropping straight into the Indian Ocean. Cliffs instead of promenades, waves instead of jet skis, and a coast that is still empty at nine at night. This guide saves you the two weeks it usually takes to work out which is which.
Uluwatu, on the Bukit in southern Bali, has 13 beaches within twenty minutes of each other, surf from April to October and a cliff coast that is quieter than Canggu or Seminyak. Bingin to Melasti is 25 minutes, not five.
What makes the Bukit different
- The coast. Cliffs, white sand and genuinely turquoise water. Thirteen beaches within twenty minutes, and you reach nearly all of them down a staircase, not from a car park.
- The surf. Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Balangan sit within a few kilometres of each other. Easy for beginners at Baby Padang, brutal at Padang Padang on the big days.
- A living place, not a resort. Specialty coffee, natural wine, nikkei, Spanish tapas, clifftop spas, CrossFit boxes and padel courts with a view. Almost all of it built in the last five years.
- And it still switches off. Ten minutes inland from any beach club there are villages, temples and rice fields. That contrast is why people who come for a week end up staying a season.
Which wave suits your level
Every wave on the Bukit breaks over reef and each has its tide. Choose by level first and tide second.

Getting around
There is no useful public transport. Rent a scooter if you can ride, or use Grab and Gojek, which work across the whole Bukit. Distances look short on the map and take longer than you think: Bingin to Melasti is 25 minutes, not five.
The four areas, one line each
- Bingin. The most surf-driven and the liveliest. You walk down a long staircase.
- Melasti. White sand, calm water and the big beach clubs. You drive in.
- Balangan. Long beach, friendlier wave and a quieter feel.
- Ungasan. The most central to live in, with cliffs and the cleanest sunsets.

What people ask us most.
When is the best time to visit Uluwatu?
April to October is the dry season and the best surf. November to March is wetter, quieter and cheaper. Christmas and New Year are the exception: the busiest week of the year.
Do I need a scooter?
It helps a lot, but Grab and Gojek work across the whole Bukit. If you have never ridden a scooter, Bali is not the place to learn.
Which beach is best for swimming?
Melasti and Balangan have the calmest water and the easiest access. Bingin and Padang Padang are more for looking at and surfing than for swimming.
Is it good with kids?
Yes, especially Melasti and Nusa Dua. The long-staircase beaches with shallow reef are less comfortable with small children.
How long is it from the airport?
Between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the time of day. Traffic at certain hours is real and worth allowing for.
